At a time where the job market is competitive & challenging, it’s an opportunity to think ‘outside of the box’. A career change can often seem daunting however a sideways shift may be a bit more appealing.
To achieve this, you needs to start considering 2 main topics:
How do I want to spend my working days?
I’ve touched on this in previous articles so won’t cover in depth but, focus on the key 3 things that are important to you. These become your non negotiables, and note they may change as your career progresses and priorities change.
Start to visualise what your working day looks like. When you lift your eyes from your laptop, what do you see, how do you feel?
Equally, consider what you don’t want?
2. What skills do I have that are transferrable?
Are you a great communicator, highly organised, creative thinker. These are all skills that will span across a range of jobs and industries. So start brainstorming yours skills that make you brilliant at what you do and what would be an asset to any company.
Whilst it’s easy just to think about these, at a time where the market is like never before it’s worth really spending some time to write this down.
Writing these things make them come to life and will help you really gain an appreciate for what you can offer.
Perhaps brainstorm on some post it notes, and if possible, prioritise your skills.
By getting this clarity in your head, you will be able to confidently apply and interview for roles that are transferrable. Highlight these in your CV and covering letter demonstrating why you can bring something different.
Getting the confidence to ‘put yourself out there’ into a new industry or role is tough, but these tools should help, and hopefully you will be surprised at the end result!
I'd love to hear how you got on!
